Lab Grown Diamond Price in India: What You Actually Pay

Get two quotes for the same diamond — same carat, same clarity, same certificate — and the numbers will not be close. That is the first thing to understand about the lab grown diamond price in India: it is not really a price for a stone. It is a price for a supply chain, and the chain varies far more than the diamond does.

Here is the mechanism, what actually moves the number, and how to pay for the diamond instead of the route it took to reach you.

What the lab grown diamond price in India actually covers

A diamond typically passes through three businesses on its way to you. A manufacturer grows, cuts and sets it. A distributor moves it. A showroom displays it and pays the person who hands it over.

Three businesses. Three margins. By the time a stone reaches a retail counter, part of what you pay is the rent on the counter itself.

We are the first of the three. SGJ cuts and sets its own stones in our Mumbai workshop and sells them direct — which is the entire explanation for our prices. Arithmetic, not a discount:

Those are starting prices for certified pieces, and they run up to around 60% below the mined equivalent.

Are lab grown diamonds cheaper, and why?

Because nobody had to find it.

A mined diamond carries exploration, extraction, and a supply chain built to move very small quantities of rock a very long way. A lab grown diamond is produced on a schedule — most of what sells in India today is CVD, grown by depositing carbon layer by layer. Same carbon, same crystal structure, same hardness, same brilliance. The difference is where it grew, not what it is.

So the lab grown vs natural diamond price gap is a production-cost gap, not a quality gap. That distinction matters, because the price difference constantly gets read as a quality difference — and it is not one. A certified lab grown diamond is a real diamond, and no jeweller can tell otherwise by looking at it. The CVD diamond price in India tracks production capacity and cutting quality, both of which are far more predictable than mining output.

What actually changes the price?

Four dials, and they are the same four for any diamond. The GIA's 4Cs guide is the canonical reference; here is what each dial does to the bill.

Carat moves the price fastest, and not in a straight line. A stone twice the weight costs considerably more than twice as much, because larger rough is harder to produce and cut well. This is why there is no single answer to what a 1 carat lab grown diamond price in India should be: two one-carat stones with different cut and clarity grades are genuinely different products, and a quote that ignores that is quoting weight, not a diamond.

Cut decides whether the stone looks alive. It is also the dial people underweight when shopping on a spreadsheet, because it is the hardest to compare on paper.

Colour and clarity matter until they don't. Somewhere around VS clarity, the inclusions stop being findable without magnification. Past that point you are buying a better certificate, not a better-looking ring.

That last sentence costs us money. We say it anyway.

Does the certificate change what you pay?

It should change what you trust.

Every stone we sell is certified by IGI, GIA or HRD. The certificate records carat, cut, clarity and colour — and it is the only part of a seller's description you can verify yourself. IGI publishes a report-verification tool: punch in any report number, including ours, and check it against their database.

Everything else in a listing is a claim. The certificate is a record. When two similar-looking quotes disagree, compare the certificates first — that is usually the whole explanation.

What does a custom piece cost?

Custom work is where factory-direct shows up most, because there is no counter markup to add and no third party to coordinate through.

What to ask before you pay

Take four questions into any showroom:

1. Who made this? If the seller cannot say, there is at least one margin in the price you are not seeing.
2. What is the report number? Then verify it yourself rather than trusting the printout.
3. What is the cut grade? Not just carat and clarity — cut is what you will actually look at every day.
4. What does the same spec cost elsewhere? One comparison quote. Ten minutes. The only way to know whether a price is reasonable.
