Earrings are the one piece you buy twice
Every other piece of diamond jewellery needs one good stone. A pair of earrings needs two that match — same carat, same colour, same clarity, and the same look under the same light. That is a sourcing problem, not a marketing one, and it is the reason a matched pair and a single pendant of identical total weight are not the same purchase.
The premium is mild on small stones and steep on large ones. Two half-carat stones that match are ordinary. Two two-carat stones that match are a hunt. Any quote that treats earrings as simply twice a pendant is either rounding in its own favour or has not looked at the stones yet.
What that means practically: on earrings, the grade you can afford to drop is clarity before colour. Two stones sitting centimetres apart on either side of a face are compared to each other far more often than either is inspected on its own, and mismatched warmth is visible in a way an included spot at arm's length is not.

Studs, hoops, drops — where the money sits
Styles are not price tiers. They are different answers to where you want the money — in the stones, in the metal, or in the making.
Studs and tops
The piece most people mean by diamond earrings. One stone per ear, sitting close to the lobe, so almost the whole price is the two stones. This is where matching matters most and where a certificate is worth reading twice.
Solitaire studs
A single larger stone per ear instead of a cluster. The scarce thing is a large clean pair that matches, not the carat weight itself — which is why a solitaire pair climbs faster than the same weight split across small stones.
Hoops
The metal does the visual work and the stones stay small, so the day's gold rate moves the quote more than the grades do. The sensible choice when you want size on the ear without putting the budget into two large stones.
Drops and jhumkas
Length reads as occasion. Many small stones across a moving frame means the making — the setting hours, the articulation — becomes a real share of the price rather than a rounding error. Ask for the labour line separately.

Almost every site ranking for diamond earrings sells one origin and quietly argues against the other. We cut and set both, which makes this the one recommendation on the page we have no reason to slant.
A lab grown stone is the same carbon in the same crystal structure, graded by IGI, GIA, HRD on the same scales. It costs less because it was produced on a schedule rather than found — up to 60% below its mined twin, which is a production-cost gap and not a quality gap.
A natural stone carries the older tradition, and for many buyers that is the whole reason. It is a real reason. It is not a financial one — diamond jewellery of either origin usually resells well below what you paid, so if the pair is being bought as a store of value, buy something else.

Why does a pair cost more than a single stone of the same total weight?
Because a pair has to match. Two stones of the same carat, colour and clarity that also look identical to the eye are harder to source than one stone twice the size, and the closer you get to a large matched pair the sharper that premium becomes. It is the one cost driver in earrings that nobody explains, and it is why a matched pair and a solitaire pendant of the same total weight are not the same purchase.
